The certificate in proficiency in Portuguese language for foreigners (Celpe-Bras) in granted to foreigners with a satisfactory performance in the Portuguese test developed by the Ministry of Education (MEC) through Anísio Teixeira National Institute of Educational Studies and Research (Inep).

Internationally, the exam is accepted in firms and educational institutions as proof of competence in the Portuguese language. In Brazil, the exam is required for foreigners by higher education institutions for admission to undergraduate courses, technology majors and postgraduate programs.

Celpe-Bras is the only Brazilian certificate of proficiency in Portuguese officially recognized. It is granted in four levels: intermediate, upper intermediate, advanced and upper advanced.

According to the schedule established in a public notice previously published twice a year, the exam is applied in Brazil and in other countries in April and October, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).

How to become an applicator center

The request for accreditation must be presented to Inep, the responsible organ for accreditation of applicator centers of Celpe-Bras in Brazil and abroad. The interested institution should send the plea in Portuguese, by letter to the Basic Education Evaluation Board of Inep (Daeb), according to instructions of Art. 7 of Decree nº 334, July 2nd, 2013.
